The Hair Life-Cycle

Like many other biological processes, hair growth is cyclical. During its growth phase, which normally lasts from 2 to 6 years, it will grow about 1cm a month. This phase is called the anagen phase.

At the end of this period, blood supply to the hair bulb slows down and eventually stops; then hair ceases to grow and moves into the catagen phase - a very short transition phase lasting 1 - 2 weeks. The hair is now no longer being developed but remains attached to the scalp for a further 2 - 4 months before detaching itself. This is called the telogen phase.

A ratio of 85% anagen hair, 1% catogen hair and 14% telogen hair represents the normal situation. However, there are various factors that can reduce the hair in the growing phase (the anagen phase) and therefore increase the telogen phase, making us lose hair excessively.

Hair has a lifespan of 2 to 6 years. A hair follicle is able to produce a new hair 20 to 25 times. You will therefore replace your hair several times during your lifetime. In view of this, it is only natural that we lose 30 - 90 hairs daily. It is possible though that such hair loss can increase over the years. If you lose more than 90 - 100 hairs a day, it is vital to encouage healthy growth by taking Pil-Food, an oral hair product, which supplies the essential nutrients necessary for the synthesis of hair.
