This electric fencing kit includes everything you might need to create a semi-permanent electric fence suitable for protecting ponds against predators such as Heron.

There are four variations of this electric fencing kit available and all the kits are supplied with the components necessary to construct a two line electric fence of up to 100m in length. Use the drop down Order Box at the bottom of the page to select your preferred power source and conductive fencing material i.e. Battery or Mains power and Galvanised Wire or Electric Tape.

General Information

The supplied components allow for a great deal of flexibility regarding construction and can be adapted to deter various unwelcome visitors to your pond with the design of your fence determined by the natural behaviour of the predators.

For example; A trip wire setup, with the extra jolt of an electric shock usually seems to do the trick against Heron. Heron will seldom land in the water, preferring instead to wade into the shallows from the bank; so to create a fence that has proven effective against heron set up a “trip wire” fence consisting of two (occasionally three) lines of either wire or green tape supported on our rabbit fence posts approximately 1 foot from the waters edge. This will deter the heron from walking to the ponds edge and also restricts the room available to land on the bank inside the fence, thus making the pond less attractive. In some cases it may be worth considering connecting additional lines across the pond or cutting corners etc.

Other animals may require more electrified lines to stop them, depending on their size and behaviour patterns. Mink and Otters for example will require a three or four line system to stop them, while a dog will most likely be stopped by two lines, much like the Heron.

Each Pond Protection Kit includes the following items:

• Selection of connectors/insulators appropriate to the fencing material.

The choice of fencing material is largely down to preference. The increased visibility of the tape probably gives it an advantage as a more intimidating barrier, but it is not as strong, long lasting or conductive as polywire or galvanised wire. Also, if the pond concerned is a feature of your garden, a wire fence that is less noticeable will be preferable. Many fish farmers prefer to use wire due to the increased conductivity ensuring the predator receives a more effective shock and as we’re constructing an electric fence, perhaps this should be the most important consideration.

Generally, the choice of energiser is based on the length of fence (sum of all wires combined) and the source of power, mains or battery; these kits are supplied with energisers providing sufficient power for the length of fencing material included. If you choose the mains powered energiser please ensure it is sited under cover for example in a shed.

Should you wish to extend the fence or have to deal with a large amount of encroaching vegetation, it may be worth considering an upgrade to a more powerful energiser.

Other Options/Considerations

The kits include 200m of fencing material. Should you wish to extend the length follow the above links to add the additional items required. If extending beyond 6-800m of fence line (sum of all wires) we would recommend upgrading to a more powerful. Add at least one earth spike for each 1000m of fence line.

Consider using some extra Double Insulated Cable to run under larger shrubs etc, in effect creating a series of short fences between shrubs. So long as the predators concerned cannot get past the undergrowth and you make good connections this will be fine and might help with the aesthetics. The single tape clamp and bolt joint clamps in the Connectors section of the website are good examples of the connectors to use for this and also for fixing extra lines to run across the pond.

Finally, consider the additional deterrent of a Fence Line Indicator Lamp for any night time predators, but don’t forget that this will flash in time with the pulses of current down the line so you probably wouldn’t want it on when sitting in the garden.
